CONTRIBUTING TO THE CREATION OF TEACHING CHAIRS

The INSTN Foundation is involved in the creation of Teaching Chairs around key scientific and technological themes for the success of nuclear, renewables, and energy systems projects.

It participates in the financing of projects associating cutting-edge research and training of excellence proposed by the founding members and actors of the sector.

The results obtained will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and to the progress of research at national and international levels.

INTERNATIONAL TEACHING RESEARCH CHAIR “INNOVATIVE PROCESSES FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING”

The INSTN Foundation is involved as associated member in the creation of an international teaching research chair “Innovative processes for advanced manufacturing”. The objective of the chair is to develop new generations of synthesis, processing and integration of advanced materials for industry. The research activities will support and stimulate cross-talk between academic and industrial partners thus generating synergies between different research topics, and providing strong interaction on national and international levels.

The project echoes strategic directions identified by the INSTN Foundation :

  • Answer the needs of the nuclear professionals in France and abroad,
  • Develop new generations of innovative industrial processes for the synthesis,
  • Implement and integrate advanced materials for industry.

CONTIBUTING TO IMPROVING LIFE CONDITIONS FOR STUDENTS

Supporting students in their career planning, enabling them to study in the right conditions, promoting equal opportunities, facilitating mobility for internships and study visits are essential contributions to the training of tomorrow’s talents.

The INSTN Foundation strives to reduce inequalities and discrimination for motivated and exemplary students.

AWARDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

A scholarship programme has been set up to support students following INSTN Education and Training programmes.

  • The first round of scholarships was focused on India, following the recent signing of partnership agreements between France and India in the field of nuclear energy.

Typically, the French Embassy sets up scholarships for talented Indian students. The INSTN Foundation is helping to supplement these scholarships to ensure that the students are able to live comfortably whilst studying in France.

The awarding of scholarships takes place following prior assessment by the Embassy and a final decision by an Ad Hoc Committee, set up by the INSTN Foundation’s Executive Committee.

FUNDING THE DESIGN OF EDUCATIONAL TOOLS AND FACILITIES

The integration of digital technology using multimedia teaching solutions modernises training programmes, making them more attractive to a new generation focused on the digital world and connected devices. Digital transformation helps to add value to and supplement course content, improving teaching effectiveness.

The INSTN Foundation supports the development of new information technologies and innovative education and training tools to maintain excellence in teaching.

PARTICIPATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN AUGMENTED VIRTUAL REALITY TRAINING REACTOR

The augmented virtual reality platform EVOC (for Enhanced Virtual Open Core) is aimed at multimodal training on nuclear reactors for teaching. This project, initiated in 2017 by the French National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN) and the result of a collaboration with CEA experts is a world first. It offers a flexible (several scenario available) and innovative training solution with features and teaching methods never before offered to strengthen the skills of the trainees.

The AVR system provides trainees with an interactive 4D training experience combining a balanced mix of real and virtual worlds, using both digital and physical resources:

  • The system comprises facilities for the replication of a reactor control room, the reactor hall and its access zone (changing rooms and airlock).
  • Both parts (control panel and simulator) are fully interconnected. Even the Cherenkov effect is replicated.
  • Particular care is being taken in replicating the sensory aspects of a reactor environment: trainees’ clothing, noises, and all of the typical features of a reactor hall will be incorporated.
  • The digital solutions include multimedia content such as 360° immersive videos, digital recording of real facilities, and replication of ISIS with a hyper-realistic 3D model.
  • A portable version of the system will allow users to transport or move it according to their training needs in France or abroad.

EVOC control console

EVOC was officially presented to the public at the WNE (World Nuclear Exhibition) in June 2018. The platform installed on the CEA stand allowed the public to test its resources and performance.

The EVOC platform is being developed in collaboration with the CEA, EDF, Areva, the CSFN (French Nuclear Industry Strategy Committee – Comité Stratégique de la Filière Nucléaire), as well as the INSTN Foundation with our contribution of about 10%.

PARTICIPATING IN KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

Knowledge transfer allows to promote a better understanding of energy issues and better knowledge of nuclear energy.

Developing the attractiveness of the nuclear sector, particularly among young people, in order to attract, train and recruit the talent of tomorrow is a key challenge for the INSTN Foundation.

With this in mind, it is a priority to encourage the dissemination of a better knowledge of nuclear energy to the greatest number of people, and its contribution to low-carbon energy solutions.

A MOOC ON NUCLEAR ENERGY IN FRANCE

A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is an effective knowledge transfer and communication tool, accessible to a wide audience. This learning process echoes the goal of the INSTN Foundation to support the development of tools for transferring knowledge and improving the awareness of the general public about nuclear energy.

INSTN has developed a MOOC on the economic, environmental, and industrial aspects of nuclear energy in collaboration with the French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN – Société Française d’Energie Nucléaire).

In 2017, the French National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN), in cooperation with the French Society for Nuclear Energy (SFEN), launched the production of the MOOC “Nuclear energy in France”. An updated session is being prepared for 2019.

This course deals with the economic, environmental, industrial and societal dimensions of nuclear energy in France, and has been available since February 2018 on the France Université Numérique (FUN) platform. It also aims to demonstrate the professional business prospects within the nuclear value chain and to develop the attractiveness of nuclear professions among young talent and qualified players.

INSTN Foundation funding has covered over 50% of the total cost of this MOOC.

PROJECT UNDER STUDY: INTERNATIONAL VERSION OF THE MOOC ON NUCLEAR ENERGY

The MOOC on nuclear energy will be adapted for English-speaking public with an international edition. The INSTN Foundation will also support the funding of the project along with the dissemination of knowledge at an international scale.
